Debt Free Sooner?

DebtFreeI came across this article as a re-tweet from someone on my twitter feed and thought it was a little ray of sunshine this weekend since my last blog post on people living paycheque to paycheque as it wasn’t very positive news.

The article from the Edmonton Journal states that “Albertans expect to be among the youngest to be debt free”.  That’s good news and maybe that means some people are starting to get it?  There has been some question as to what “debt free” means however this article somewhat says it to the point where people have successfully paid down all of their debt, which we’ve done. “Being debt-free is a long-term financial goal for many Canadians, and this poll suggests Albertans are optimistically looking ahead to the stage of life they will be in when they successfully paid down all of their debt,” said Christina Kramer, executive vice-president of retail distribution and channel strategy for the CIBC”

So in those terms I’ll agree that we are debt free despite those who say we are not.  Really it doesn’t matter what others think to be honest.  Outside of us renting we don’t owe any bank or credit organization any money.  That’s a very freeing feeling to be consumer debt free.

I’m glad to see others are starting to think they will be debt free younger, that’s very positive news. Have a great Sunday.

Amway Helping Slave Lake Alberta

slave-lake-fireIt’s old news now but the impact of the recent Slave Lake fire is still felt today as many people have lost their homes and many belongings to this massive fire that destroyed 40% of the town.  http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/story/2011/05/16/slave-lake-fire-evacuation.html

Yesterday I heard someone from our upline, I’m guessing our upline Emeralds who used to live close to Slave Lake, contacted Amway to let them know about this disaster. I’m sure most of you know Amway is very giving when it comes to disasters and relief efforts and this was no exception.  They work closely with The Red Cross and now that they’ve been aware of the Slave Lake fire they’ve added it to their list to help out.  Just like that it was added. That’s pretty darn awesome to have a company that will help out that quickly in a time of need and I’ll support that big time.  Lindsay and I are big in helping those in need and contributing where we can and to be part of a company that has those same values is awesome.

A big thank you goes out to all those men and women who served to save the majority of the city, without those efforts the whole town would have been lost and many more people displaced from their homes. Also a big thank you to Amway and The Red Cross for making sure those affected are taken care of and some semblance of normalcy is returned.

If you want to help out you can donate through the Red Cross here – http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=39285&tid=001

Update: Will and Kate visited Slave Lake with the Royal Tour today July 6th. Very nice gesture of them to visit what is being called Canada’s second worst insurance claim disaster

Happy Family Day!

For Alberta residents (unsure who else in Canada gets this), Happy Family Day.  Enjoy the day with whatever you are doing.  We are cleaning the house and getting the babies room cleaned up so that we can be prepared for the big day.  So in some part we are spending it getting ready for family!

It’s sad that the government only recognizes one day for the family, just goes to show how much they really do care about the family. If you want more time with your family then you need to make changes in your life to do that.  It can be done a number of different ways.  I know for us, what we are doing with our business is working for us and is actually going to allow us to have that freedom down the road to spend more time with our family. After all that is one of the main reasons why we started our own business and asked for coaching and mentorship from people who’ve done exactly what we want out of life.

Enjoy the day and cherish these moments with your family.

A Man’s Character

I know that a man’s (or woman’s) character is built upon many characteristics.  I believe it’s the foundation of what makes us who we are.  I recently blogged about “Trust” and some examples around that and how it relates to this business and in life.  Here are some great quotes that I’ve got up in my office from John Maxwell around character:

“There are really only three kinds of people. Those who don’t succeed, those who achieve success temporarily, and those who become and remain successful. Having character is the only way to sustain success. No matter how talented or rich or attractive people are, they will not be able to outrun their character.”

"People of poor character tend to blame their choices on circumstances. Ethical people make good choices regardless of circumstances. If they make enough good choices, they begin to create better conditions for themselves."

I think it matters what people think about your character, if fact if you want to become successful in any area in life then you better care.  Character is something that continually needs to be worked on and for me that’s why I love this business because that is one of the main focus’s.  As I continue to build this business and grow closer and closer to World Wide Dreambuilders, I’m getting to see the real character of this great support system.  There are quite a few differencing opinions of World Wide Dreambuilders and that’s fine, everyone has their own opinion.  However I’ve not once experienced anything ill willed towards me, my wife or our family, or felt taken advantage of from associating with this company.  This company has great integrity which is another aspect of what someone’s character includes.  Its this integrity that has someone like John Maxwell associating, endorsing and giving his time to this great leadership company.  Check out John’s quick minute on the word integrity.

Integrity

While you cannot build this business without trust, you cannot build this business with a shady character or someone of poor integrity.  As I pointed out in the previous blog post on trust, you need to be selfless which just so happens to be another great characteristic of character.  I believe, and it’s backed up by our growth in this Alberta market, these are some of the reasons why we are exploding and why a lot of eyes are on what I’ll call “The Canadian Movement”. It’s pretty darn exciting to be part of something big, and big things are coming as we have some leaders who have shown good character going into their Diamond qualification this year.

I believe we are in the business of developing leaders, people being able to take charge of their own life and lead it however they want and in whatever direction they want.  The Amway opportunity definitely gives us that ability and we’ve seen it first hand with the year we’ve been building this.  We continually strive to improve our character because nobody can ever be perfect and we are far from it.  We’ve had set backs, we’ve had great successes, but best of all we have never sacrificed what makes up our character and we never will.  That’s why we will become successful in this and help many others do the same.

Have a great weekend!

2010 Easter Seals Video

Finally got a video of my rappel for the 2010 Easter Seals The Drop Zone campaign where I raised over $1,500 for the Easter Seals.  Amway is a founding sponsor for the Easter Seals and has a huge involvement in this great charity.  I was proud to be there not only for myself but a representing IBO.  Watching this video brings back some great memories from the day and the rush it was to rappel down this 27 or 28 story building.

I know for the 2011 campaign we plan to raise at minimum $50,000 as we leverage other IBO’s within Alberta to raise charity for a great cause.  If we had just 500 IBO’s raise $100 dollars (5 people x $20, which is EASY) we could raise some awesome awareness and cash for this great cause.

Jay at North of the 49th did a great blog entry highlighting this along with a few other IBO’s who participated in other location.  Check out it HERE!

Stay tuned as the 2011 campaign kicks off and we kick this thing into high gear!
