I’ve always wanted to visit the East Cost of Canada and finally this weekend I got the chance. While it was mainly for work, I did have some downtime where I was able to walk around Halifax and view the harbour and check out the downtown core a bit. My wife lived out here when she was going to school and has raved about the East Coast so much and I never really understood it until today.
Halifax reminds me a lot of Boston, I was there a few years ago on a conference and when I showed my wife the pictures she said it was like Halifax but just smaller. I now see what she means. This part of Canada is quite beautiful and while it wasn’t the best of weather (apparently I brought the snow since it was sunny and warm the day before I got here, OOPS!) it was still great to get out here and see what some of it was about.
There is a lot of history out here and for anyone looking to visit I highly recommend it. Halifax has the second largest natural harbour at 60 feet deep. It played a pivotal role for many wars where naval ships would come and refuel as well was a major immigration point for Canada. I won’t go into much detail here as you can read up on it on Wikipedia and many other locations. The buildings are pretty cool, old brick buildings with some real beautiful character homes as you travel inland. I visited Truro which is about 1 hour north west of Halifax to see our branch office out there and do some work. The town is quite quaint and has those character homes I mentioned.
I would love to come back here with my wife and soon to be family and spend a good few weeks out on the east coast, not only Halifax. One thing I wish I had time for was to see the Bay of Fundy and the huge low tides that it has, as much as 50 feet difference. One of the guys at the office was saying you can raft on the tide waves called Tidal Bore Rafting (1:40min mark is where it start), sorta like white water rafting we do here in Alberta however it goes with the tide.
We will be back though and make sure we do it up right and spend a good amount of time here. Again if your looking at visiting the coast make sure you do, and make sure you spend a good amount of time here as there is lots to see, lots to eat and lots to do. Just don’t come in the winter or early spring!
