Today my wife and I along with a few other people did some pretty cool dream building. The Villeneuve Airport just north of Edmonton held an open house where people had their personal airplanes available for viewing and some of the larger ones available to sit in.
I’ve written a few times about dream building here and to be honest I think it’s one of those things we forget to do or at least make a mental note to do. I don’t care what kind of dream it is, from the very smallest to the very grandest, you need to be able to visualize and get around the things you dream about. That could be as simple as visiting one of those home lottery dream homes that most major charity corporations do, going to a car or boat show, or like today visiting an airports open house. The more you get around the things you dream about the better the chances of you obtaining them.
We’ve got some pretty big dreams and today the dream of owning an aircraft was at the forefront. Don’t laugh, get your own dream! While it is somewhat of an expensive adventure to own an aircraft, pay for it’s maintenance, pay for fuel (more on that later), landing fee’s, parking fee’s, etc.. it’s also the closest thing to a time machine you can buy. How is it a time machine? Well lets say you wanted to drive to Arizona from Edmonton, you’d have to drive 2,733 KM’s straight south on Highway 2 and then I-15. It would take you almost 30 hours without stopping. If you were to book a flight from Edmonton you’d have to make a connection as there are no direct flights and it would take you 5 hours flying time there, 8 back, not to mention you’d have to go early because it’s international.
So where does the time machine come in? Well we talked to a guy today who owns a 2007 Cirrus SR22-G3 Turbo GTS and fly’s down to Arizona regularly to their property down there. We asked him how long that took and how much in gas. He said with him and his wife they can fly down in 6 hours with one stop in Idaho to re-fuel. The cost of gas return is $1,200. I just checked online at www.Aircanada.com and the cost of the flight for one person is $1,320, do the math and that’s $2,640 for two people not to mention all the time wasted at the airport. Now that’s what I call a time machine. As I mentioned yesterday time is one of the most expensive resources in the world, if you could have the means to own an aircraft like this Cirrus SR22 then you could gain a lot of time back for say trips to Calgary, or for us visiting family in Southern BC which takes us 11 hours of driving time.
Now I guess the next logical question is just how much
is a 2007 Cirrus SR22-G3 Turbo GTS. We asked this question to the owner and he said around $300,000. I just checked on www.controller.com and found the exact same plane and he was bang on. 2007 Cirrus SR22-G3 Turbo GTS as listed on Controller.com is $311,594 CAD. That may seem like a lot of money to some and yes it is, but compared to something like a Gulfstream G550 which used are around $40 Million, that’s a steal. The last question we asked this guy was what he did for a living. He was the Public Relations person for TELUS and I can tell you he’s not making millions having known people in that similar position. So it is possible for sure, just a matter of priorities and what you want.
We talked to a few more people who owned multiple aircraft and ask them how they got started, how they owned planes, got trained, etc… How they started off is how we plan to start off as well. Incorporate your business, purchase a plane through your business (like the Cirrus), hire a pilot who’s a certified trainer that can train you on your own plane, and then get your hours up. That’s how a lot of small business, or entrepreneurs will start off and what we thought was confirmed by others. You don’t need to be a millionaire to own an airplane, however you better have a steady stream of income to afford the upkeep and maintenance. If a PR person from TELUS can own a plane, we can. However we won’t finance it like that guy.
If you cannot dream build or don’t know how (don’t be ashamed if you can’t some people just cannot dream big), you need to get around people that do now how. Get inspired, write your dreams and goals down. All success books will tell you your at minimum 50% more likely to achieve your goals if you have them written down.
What are some of your dreams and how do you dream build?
