Failing a Challenge

success_failureWell I’ve failed this years Summer Blog Challenge.  I really hate losing a challenge or anything for that matter.  However on a positive spin it’s given me something to write about.  A Japanese proverb comes to mind in just this situation – “Fall down seven times, get up eight”. So while I’ve officially dropped out of the challenge I’m not going to let it get me down, I’m going to “get up” so to speak and keep writing.

Failure is a funny thing.  It can wipe someone out entirely if they don’t have the proper mindset.  Failure isn’t a bad thing and yet so many people get upset when they fail and end up quitting whatever it was they were doing, a sport, a business, or even a relationship. Thomas Watson is quoted that the formula for success is “Double the rate of failure”.  We make failure the enemy of success but it is actually our best teacher.

My wife and I have failed at different aspects of our business so many times, but it’s that willingness to learn from our mistakes and keep going that makes us successful.  And we are in a lot of aspects and the things that we do fail at, we teach others not to do or teach them in a different way so they don’t make the same mistakes we do.  That’s the great thing about having a coach or mentor in any part of life, you can gleam off of them so you can streamline your path in life however you want.  Just make sure your coach or mentor has a coach or mentor themselves, nobody wants to be getting advice from “the guy”.

So while this post is short and sweet, just make sure you don’t let failure take you out.  Overcome, learn and move on and you will become successful in whatever it is you’ve set out to do.  Quitting is for chumps who choose to let failure win.

Success Rate of Other Business’s

Success-Failure Today we had dinner with an amazing couple that Lindsay sorta works with in her current job.  They are actually a pretty decent couple, and I say actually because they are in the financial advisor type of position in a place where Lindsay works that are not actually broke and stand on principal and really do want to help people.  Unlike the other scum that Lindsay works with where they lie, cheat, break the law, only care about the highest commission rates, and sell what’s best for them not what’s best for the client.  Now if you think this is the only place like that, think again.  It happens more often then you think.

So while we were having dinner with them we were talking on how people are successful in the finance  world and how hard it actually is.  He said very few actually make decent money where they don’t have to go against principals or morals.  They are by no means wealthy beyond means however they are pretty successful and it took them 4-5 years of nose to the grindstone and having that short term pain for long term gain mentality.  They basically had the whatever it takes mentality. Hmm sounds familiar.  I can respect people like that, people who despite everything stand on principal no matter what.

Recently another blog called Amthrax wrote a blog entry on Realism, SuccessQuoteFriendship and 0.0035% and while it was a pretty good article on a few notes, I was thinking about it today in how the success rate somewhat applies to this couples business and really how success rates really apply to any entrepreneurial undertaking.  The finance world is very tough and very cut throat, people are actually out to discredit you, throw you under the bus just to get ahead.  Being a successful financial advisor on your own is very tough but people do make it.  I don’t think they have quite the same success/failure rate that we do however I’d rather take what we do any day over what they have to go through.  We build business with integrity, morals and stand on some pretty awesome principals, the same cannot be said for the financial world.  One of our cardinal rules is “Don’t mess with anyone’s money” and we take that VERY serious.  Finance world… not so much.

I’ve picked on the financial advisor world a bit however I could pick on any entrepreneurial business as a lot of business’s fail and some succeed.  Everyone has their own percentages and everyone has their own little quirks.  There are negative and positive about every business out there whether it’s the Amway Global business or some Financial Advisor Business to the Pink Lovey Dovey Rabbit Company that only promotes the love of rabbits (not sure where that came from), but everything has it’s own success and failure rate.  What I think is the true measure of success, is when people despite the odds, despite the negative, despite all the naysayers, rise to the top and lay claim to the hard work and effort that was put into whatever endeavour they were trying to overcome.  That’s what I think success is.

Its That Slight Edge

I figured I’d do a book blog entry and change it up a little.  I’ve found myself re-reading The Slight Edge and I’m actually quite happy I picked this back up.  I did a blog post about it back in November of last year and it’s interesting to go back and see where my mentality was back then after reading it for the first time.  I find you always get something new out of a book when you read it again.  A lot of what I read back then applies today however you just get a deeper connection with it as you grow into your own self improvement.

One thing I read back then is a quote by Thomas J. Watson (found of IBM) which states “The formula for success is quite simple: double the rate of failure”.  I thought what the heck does that mean.  I’ve always been told growing up to never fail, failure is not an option.  Well by failure you’ll never learn to correct your mistakes and learn from other opportunities.  Check out Babe Ruth for example, while he has the most home runs, he also has the most strike outs.  I’ve learnt to deal with some failure in our business and that’s fine because it’s that fine line of picking yourself up and continuing on, or saying to hell with this it’s not worth it that sets people apart.  That is a VERY fine line.

However the biggest thing about this book is the title it’s self, The Slight Edge.  It’s those little changes, those simple disciplines that continue to do bit by bit that help us become successful.  Something as simple as reading 15 minutes a day every day.  If you read just 15 minutes a day how many books could you read in a year?  I tell you I’ve read more books in the last 8 months then I have in the last 10 years.

LifeThis picture illustrated that pretty well and is from the book. I’m not the creative.  However I made it in MSPaint ;)   Simple disciplines done over time will further your life ahead however that looks for you.  Simple errors in judgement continued over time will have negative impacts.  This is simple stuff but when you take a look back at your life you may figure out why you ended up where you are today.

There really is a lot of great stuff out of this book, I highly recommend it.  It’s not just for people wanting to be rich or mega successful, it’s a great book applies to anyone that wants to apply success principals to anything in your life.  Whether that’s cooking, knitting, playing video games, gardening, web development/WoW, being great parents, teaching, biking, or curling, these principals can be applied to all of that.
