Showing Family and Friends

December is a great month to visit with family and friends as the holiday season is usually packed with catching up, coffee’s and visits to various family and friend Chrsitmas parties.  It’s also been one of the best times to show those family and friends who know we are building our own business in partnership with Amway and World Wide Dreambuilders.  I know quite a few friends and family read my blog and they’ve been able to gain some insight into what it is we do however they really don’t know what is we actually do.

What I love about showing the plan is that in a one on one setting its never perfect and it allows for more interaction than say in a larger presentation style where we might plug people into a larger room where either I’m speaking or our coaches are speaking.  This month we’ve done a few one on one plans with friends and family that love and trust us to honestly just show them what it is we do.  There are no expectations of “signing up” or anything like that.  Its really just giving those friends and family that know we do “something” some context.  As we do with anyone we take through a more formal qualification and interview process, we give full disclosure of all the details and really don’t hide anything contrary to what others may or may not say.

One thing that has bothered me over the last year and a bit of building this business is how some friends and family may be apprehensive around us because we are “In Amway” (stay tuned for a blog entry on that some day) and they think we are going to “recruit” them or try and get them “in our thing”.  That couldn’t be further from the truth, we don’t just “sign” anyone up and that’s where a lot of miscommunication comes from and why this month we’ve shown some of our friends and family what we do.  It’s quite amazing how I’d say the majority of people we show how their perception of what it is we actually do changes.  Still not everyone may agree and that’s just fine.  At least they know what we do and that’s that. I’m just tired of being that elephant in the room where people watch what they say around us and or say things behind out back, not saying they do but who knows.

Again the whole point of a lot of the friends and family one on one’s is to give people a glimpse into what our vision is, why we do it, and maybe clear the air on a few things.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Enjoying Time

We’ve come across a few people who have said that all we do is this business and that we have no time or we are wasting time building something that will never come true.  Well I won’t speak to the latter but I will speak about having time.  We have a lot of time and just tonight we had a great visit with some good friends who we value a lot and love spending time with.  I posted a blog entry awhile ago about how much time we really have and give or take a few hours here or there its pretty much true.  Post: Time, People Have Plenty

When we say we build this business part time we really mean that, however for us and what we want to achieve we put a little bit more time in because we’ve seen first hand the value of the little extra effort.  Extra effort that has allowed us to have a free wife to raise a child without having the stress of a job.

Time is a funny thing, people always have different concepts of time and different values of what they feel is the best use of their time.  That’s the beauty of it, everyone can do what they want with their time and we feel we can split our time between our business, our regular job, and the relationships we want to keep close to us.

As Christmas approaches cherish the relationships you have, and enjoy the time you have with them.  Christmas time is always good for re-connecting with friends and loved ones, I wish it was Christmas time all the time!

Reconnecting

reconnect_logo Tonight we had the pleasure to reconnect with some old friends and what I love about reconnecting is seeing the change in people.  I think the best part of building this business is we get to connect with a lot of people and it’s not about “getting them in our thing”.  We’ve reconnected with a lot of people and have not even mentioned what we do.  We’ve just made a better effort reconnecting with people and I absolutely love that.  People are awesome.

The people we connected with were pretty awesome in the way they think very similar to the way we do and have been very successful in their own way.   They’ve got some amazing dreams and goals they want to knock down and actually hearing them talk about them is pretty cool.  Not many people just open up and talk about the kinds of charities the scholarships that they want to create.  I thought for a second I was talking to ourselves! lol  It’s awesome when you come across like minded individuals and to know there are actually people out there that do think the opposite of the masses and are not just sheep doing the same as everyone else.

One thing that really hit me when we were chatting was “Love and Trust” and “Fear and Doubt”.  We talked a lot about these two items and to be honest we are a world full of “Fear and Doubt”.  We could sure use a lot more “Love and Trust” in society today.  I think over the years the Love and Trust has just been waning away.  There is just so much Fear and Doubt these days compared to lets say when I was growing up.  For example when growing up all the people in the cal-de-sac I grew up in had Love and Trust for everyone.  People would watch over other people’s kids and it was a greater sense of community.  Now these days everyone has all this Fear and Doubt and thinking everyone is out to screw them or take their kids away etc…  What the hell have we as a society become?

Anyway reconnecting is awesome; give someone you’ve not met up with awhile a call and schedule a date with them!

Not Much to Say

I guess for the first time in this Summer Blogging Challenge I really don’t have anything profound to say,  anything really interesting to say.  We are heading out tonight to have dinner with Vlad and Kim, cannot remember the last time we did that, it’s been awhile for sure.  I’m excited to understand what exactly these phone calls are about, RCMP conversations and vacation stuff they’ve done.lossofwords

We are pretty busy right now with all things.  I’m busy at work trying to solidify some budget work and this week is my “on-call” week or “period” as Lindsay likes to call it.  I cannot wait to NOT be a slave to my Blackberry that’s for sure.  More than likely only one more year with how things are going in our business.  We are also preparing for Lindsay’s freedom day, just trying to get some details sorted out for that for when we free her from her job.  Won’t say much more about it cause she reads this blog ;)

Lastly we are busy investing time into people and building up existing relationships and new ones.  I think this is a great “being busy” because I love working with people and what’s even better I like helping them become successful which is what we’ve done with all our team members.  They are all kicking butt and have amazing qualities about them that make them all unique.  Probably the best part I love about what we do.

Sweet so I actually made it well over the 150 word mark and actually had just a little bit to say.  Enjoy the evening!

Hey and if you’ve not checked out these other bloggers, make sure you do!

Dreambuilding with Friends

Last night we had some amazing friends over who are building this amazing business with us and we asked them to share what their dreams and goals were and why really they are building this business.  It was pretty inspiring and you really don’t fully understand your friends or people for that matter until they open their heart and share the dreams and goals they have for life and where they want to end up.

We also had the chance to share with them because they had asked us and when I watch my amazing wife share what she wants in life it’s pretty amazing.  She really opens up her heart and ends up getting teary because she wants it so bad.  That’s what it takes, you really need to want something bad enough that it hurts in order for it to come to fruition.

It really got me thinking again about our goals and what we want in life and I figured I’d put those things down again.  I always love writing them out because it really gets me thinking and honestly just shows you the kinds of things that will be available in what we are doing.  We know this because we’ve seen it first hand in our coaches and also their coaches and beyond.

This year we will have Lindsay retire from her job and never have to work for another man again.  She will no longer have to work for someone that tells her when she has to be in to start her day, no longer tells her when she can have lunch and really no longer has control over her paycheque.  Of course she will still work but it will be working on our future through our business. So maybe it’s semi-retired.  :)   Either way she will now be home to raise our kids when we have them and won’t need to drop them off at a dayhome or daycare.  WE will be raising our kids and instilling our values into them, not someone else.  That is goal number one for us right now and why we are spending a lot of time building our business.

We also want to become debt free as some of my previous posts have shown and we will achieve that this year.  We are making some tough choices and really streamlining our life so that we can get the most out of it for the short term.  There will be some sacrifices however having a shot term mentality doesn’t work for us because we have HUGE long term goals and the old adage small term pain for long term gain really applies.  I know some people reading this know that for sure.

Moving on with our life we want to move out to Kelowna where we may end up renting for another year or two while we have our house built and paid for in cash.  Renting isn’t necessarily a bad thing as we will end up saving far more then what equity would be build up in our house and with how much we’d be paying down in our mortgage.  We will end up raising our kids out in Kelowna and either put them in private school or have them home schooled with a personal teacher.  Our kids will get first hand teaching instead of being in a school full of 30-40 kids where it takes 10 times longer to teach kids because the class can only go as fast as the slowest kid.  By this time I will have also walked away from my job and will be at home raising my kids as well.  Being able to take them out in the afternoon and go hiking or skiing for their physical education instead of a 60 minute class at school.  How cool is that?

Lastly family is key for us and we want to be able to spend a lot of time with our family so as we continue to grown our business we will help to retire our parents before they need to.  When you really look at what it would take to retire them you start to get a sense of, we can do that.  They don’t need to work or be on the “Work till you die program”.  We want our parents to enjoy as much time with our kids and our family as possible.  No longer will their be handcuffed to their jobs so they cannot see their grandchildren grow up.

These are just some short term goals that we have in the next little while and as we continue to grow this business where the work we did a year ago is still paying us today, we will continue to help other people do the same as us and help them realize they too can achieve dreams and goals like this or whatever their dreams and goals are.  We fully believe this is possible and we will make it happen.

Obviously we have much more dreams and goals then this, but this is just the start for The Guthrie’s and we could not be more excited to be doing what we are doing.  We have been blessed for sure!
